Elements and Performance Criteria

Range Statement

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Unit context includes:

WHS requirements, including legislation, building codes, material safety management systems, hazardous and dangerous goods codes and local safe operating procedures or equivalent

work is carried out in accordance with legislative obligations, environmental legislation, relevant health regulations, manual handling procedures and organisation insurance requirements

work requires individuals to demonstrate some discretion, judgement and problem solving

Materials include one (1) or more of the following:

annealed coloured and textured glass suitable for architectural and stained glass

furniture applications and mirrors

speciality glasses, including flash coloured glass and antique glass

Tools and equipment include:

flat felt covered cutting tables

tungsten wheel glass cutters

circle cutters

L-squares and straight edges

tape measures

marking pens and chinagraph pencils

templates and lubricants

tables appropriate for cutting glass

Thin glass includes:

annealed coloured and textured glass of manufactured thickness

Glass processing by hand includes:

cutting

shaping

PPE includes one (1) or more of the following:

That prescribed under legislation, regulations and enterprise policies and practices, including:

gloves

safety glasses

gauntlets

safety footwear

earmuffs

aprons and overalls

Information and procedures include one (1) or more of the following:

workplace procedures relating to the use and operation of tools and equipment and PPE

workplace instructions including job sheets, cutting lists, plans, drawings and designs

workplace procedures relating to reporting and communications

manufacturer specifications and operational procedures


Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

following work instructions, SOPs and safe work practices

identifying and interpreting specifications, drawings, standards and other relevant information to process coloured and textured glass by hand

applying safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including the use of PPE

identifying and selecting materials to be used in the work process

using mathematical ideas and techniques to complete measurements, including calculating area and estimating material requirements

using tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner

completing straight cuts by hand and cutting simple shapes, truncated and radius corners and circles in annealed coloured and textured glass

calculating the cost of jobs

disposing of scrap and off-cuts in accordance with environmental guidelines and workplace procedures

communicating and working effectively and safely with others.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE

qualities and characteristics of coloured and textured glass, including hazards and handling requirements

correct identification and use of glass cutting equipment, their functions and procedures for use

set-up and operation of glass cutting equipment, including procedures for reporting product defects or equipment faults

work flow requirements related to glass cutting

environmental protection requirements relating to the disposal of waste material

established communication channels and protocols.
